Things that Annoy Me

Ok, The Voices won.

What are The Voices I hear you ask? No I am not plural, and do not have any mental health conditions that would imply so. It is just a funny term I use when I just say ‘fuck it’ and do something.

I am, so annoyed at a lot of small things recently. So I’m writing a lot of microblog posts into one.

Nuisance #1 - Blender Hotkeys

This one is really stupid, but it’s been bothering me a lot. Blender has a lot of hotkeys, they are actually pretty good UX…

BUT I CANNOT, I WILL NOT REMEMBER THEM, AND SOME OF THE ONES I DO ARE OVERRIDED BY SYSTEM HOTKEYS. LOOKING AT YOU NVIDIA. FUCK YOU ALT+P SHOULD JUST WORK IN BLENDER WITHOUT ANY REWIRING ITS NOT A GAME!

And it’s worse because a lot of people will turn around and say oh you need to press the W+L+Ratio keys to solve your issue it’s that easy. Usually in either a random Reddit thread, StackOverflow article, or on the Blender forums. And I always go, man why didn’t I think of that, it would have made life so much easier. This has happened around 20 times or so in the last few months of actively working with Blender for animations, renders and modelling. And because of some of these hotkeys I do know I have NO idea where the actual menu items are. Sure it’s great I can quickly access this function I use regularly but WHERE THE HELL IS IT IN A MENU AND WHY IS IT THERE

Ok, that’s Rant #1 over. Screaming into the void is going well I swear. (Oh, and fuck NVidia once more. I spent like a month thinking I had some obscure Blender bug.)

Annoyance #2 - The WordPress-ification of the Internet.

This is a general one, it’s a thought I’ve held for a good while. Why in the world did we ever develop so much reliance on WordPress. I am currently job hunting so I am not bound to a bad part-time job. And do you know how bad it is? Do you? Do you really?

Let me tell you.

Every other listing relating to WebDev is for a WORDPRESS DEVELOPER. Every. Other. Listing. WordPress is a solution to a problem that only exists partially now. WE HAVE HEADLESS CMS SOLUTIONS, WE HAVE WAYS TO MAKE SSG ACCESSIBLE TO MARKETERS. WHY ARE WE STILL SELLING THE SOLUTION TO YOUR I AM STUPID AND NEED A WEBSITE NEEDS AS WORDPRESS?!?!

Don’t twist my words, WordPress has a very nice usage. If you are unable to handle Static-Site Generation, and can’t afford a web developer. It’s great to just set up and run. But we do not need Elementor, Divi and every other ‘visual’ editor solution for WordPress. These sort of things always make more sense for a static environment. And don’t get me started on WooCommerce.

Oh and since it’s all dynamic when you start relying on all these plugins, which the people selling WordPress websites often do, as soon as a security vulnerability comes into play it’s a mad scramble to update. What if you could just pay to have content that was truly static and managed by a Headless CMS with no endpoints exposed which just deploys your static site source for you? Oh. You can. Why are there companies selling people a solution that opens them up to more problems. WordPress plugins being compromised isn’t exactly an isolated incident either, I won’t go into it but you can go search it if you want. Not to mention the completely needless resource consumption. People buying cheap Linode boxes then screaming WHY WORDPRESS NO WORK with 10000 plugins. Jail.

Ok, I had to get that one out of my system, I’m sorry if you speak to me regularly you probably already heard it I just had to say it again.

Rant #3 - Discord Reliance

Similar to above. We have decided that Discord is the primary method of storing information, it wasn’t enough that we use it for communication and social spaces. We also have to keep random information behind it. No, we will not use any alternative. No, it doesn’t matter if a Matrix client ever achieves feature parity, the security of Discord is so much safer!!!!!

Why are we like this. I must admit my usage of Discord doesn’t help here but, genuinely as much as Matrix’s federation model has problems. Discord DMs are not actually appropriate for truly private communcation. They can pull your DMs at any point, there is not even basic encryption on it. Yes Matrix has it’s funny “Failed to Decrypt” issues if it’s key store gets messed up and so on, but atleast I have a guarantee that any homeserver user I DM’s homeserver can’t easily access my messages. (Yes Matrix E2EE has issues that probably still need addressing but still.) I’d even take Signal DMs for privacy over Discord. But if you ever try and say hey, could we move the space to somewhere we have control of our data a bit more? It’s always Discord is better. No matter how many times they try to throw Age Verification on, and so on. I had a case of people refusing to try to setup a temporary Voice Chat ANYWHERE even in a Browser solution because Discord VC was down. That to me, is just crazy. People are reticent to actually move, even if Discord threw Age Verification globally on Tommorow, they wouldn’t. At most a month of Nitro cancellation. This is why Discord can get away with it.

Now, I will admit nothing has Discord feature parity, but also for random friend groups? For quick communications in a group setting like FFXIV Raiding and so on? Discord is just not a neccesity, the features that it has for those functions are overkill. I do hope someone creates a competitor that forces Discord to get it’s shit together, Matrix can’t be it because of it’s fundamental design. And, I’m not sure Fluxer or Stoat can ever really reach that level of usage, since they will eventually be beholden to draconic Age Verification laws at some poin. Even if Fluxer federation becomes real, I think starting as a centralized effort will ultimately harm it in this endeavour. But, I digress, making anyone use a platform even just in a web-browser for moer than 2 seconds that’s not Discord is hell. The issue is not and will never be that a competitor isn’t good enough, it’s that people don’t want to move unless something is proven and something won’t be proven unless people move.

Ok, that aside, there’s one final Discord bit I have to say, and I said it above. Why are we using Discord to store information about niche topics like FFXIV Job Optimization, and so on. If I want to know say, the BRD Opener, I can check the Balance website which might be outdated info. Or I can load up The Balance Discord and find it faster. Now this is atleast fine, fast info publishing on Discord to be transferred to the website is a working model. But The Balance isn’t fully fleshed out on it’s website still. And not to mention, The Balance isn’t the only case of this. That’s not to say The Balance is a bad thing (it’s pretty cool to have a central resource that quickly keeps this stuff in check even if it’s simple in 2026 to pick up a new Job in FFXIV). But, when did we start doing this and why? What happened to Forums? Wikis? Discord discussion informing such content stores feels like the way it should be handled but instead, we have Discord as the primary information source for so many niche topics. Need help with your SlimeVR setup? Join a Discord. Playing a game and need help? Join the Discord. And so on.

Ok, that was a lot but I hope you can understand why it frustrates me.

AAAAAAAAAAA #4 - they/them.

I am so, so, so tired.

I am so tired of people not even trying. I want people to use they/them. Do I accept he/him? Yeah, it’s not truly out of neccesity, I don’t mind in the grand scheme. But it feels like nobody is putting effort in, whenever I correct people, it always sounds like I’m the problem. I am very over the fact that even when I make a character in Tabletop, some people will forget until reminded. I am sitting here like is it that hard to remember my pronouns are NOT he/him. Yes, a slip is fine. Yes, correcting yourself is fine. But please try.

Please, try… Please…

I just want people to try. I don’t really get why people act like I’m overreacting if I say something. To me, I don’t feel like a man, my gender, and my relationship with it is personal to me and I’d like people to just try. It is so wholeseom to hear people who just try. I promise I will respond nicer if you they/them me. I promise.

And yes my sona uses the same pronouns. If you are one of the people whose trying their best you are one of the real ones, and I don’t hate you if you accidentally he/him a lot either. I try to assume the best of people. I just…

I just want people to acknowledge that I’m not truly a man.

Maybe none of us are.
